Data centre planning: power and cooling belong in the same conversation

A practical starting point for defining capacity, resilience and infrastructure interfaces.

Start with the operating brief

A data centre brief should define the intended IT load, the expected pattern of growth and the operational requirements. Those decisions shape both the electrical architecture and the cooling approach. A headline capacity alone does not tell a project team how the facility will be operated or expanded.

Coordinate the interfaces early

Map the relationships between distribution, UPS, backup power, cooling plant, controls and the IT spaces. Confirm which team owns each interface and how equipment will be maintained. A resilient layout also needs an agreed approach to isolation, testing and operational change.

Energy efficiency is a project decision

Singapore’s Green Data Centre Roadmap places energy efficiency and green energy at the centre of future growth. IMDA identifies Green Mark for Data Centres 2024 and SS 715:2025 among the supporting initiatives. These are useful references when forming a project brief; they do not imply that any proposed facility or supplier is certified.

Define the handover evidence

Discuss commissioning boundaries, test records, updated drawings, operating manuals and training before equipment is ordered. Align the acceptance criteria with the owner’s operating needs. For an initial discussion, prepare the location, intended load, expansion assumptions and the project timeline.

General project-planning perspective. Requirements and responsibilities depend on the actual project and current applicable rules.
